Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari – Bird Watching Tours, Packages & Prices

Imagine starting your morning among the grasslands of Kasenyi, watching raptors and open-country birds while Uganda kob graze across the plains.

By afternoon, the environment has completely changed.

Your boat moves slowly along the Kazinga Channel.

African Fish Eagles watch from the shoreline.

Kingfishers flash across the water.

Herons, egrets, storks, pelicans, cormorants, waders and other water-associated birds occupy the banks.

Hippos surface beside the boat.

Elephants approach the water.

Buffaloes rest along the shoreline. And tomorrow?

You can head south towards Ishasha, where woodland, savannah and wetland habitats create yet another birding environment while the area’s famous tree-climbing lions add something most birding destinations cannot offer.

This is what makes a Queen Elizabeth birding safari special.

It is not simply about adding birds to a wildlife safari.

With more than 600 recorded bird species, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most important birding destinations.

Its combination of: Savannah, Wetlands, Lakes, Kazinga Channel, Woodland, Forest, Crater landscapes and Ishasha creates exceptional habitat diversity within one safari.

At Maseke Adventures, we arrange private Queen Elizabeth birding safaris for dedicated birders, photographers, couples, families and travelers who want birds without sacrificing Uganda’s classic wildlife.

A Short Uganda Birding & Wildlife Escape

Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights

Starts: Entebbe / Kampala

Ends: Entebbe / Kampala

Main Birding Areas: Kasenyi • Mweya • Kazinga Channel

Tour Style: Private

Accommodation: Mid-Range / Luxury Upgrade Available

Best For: Short Uganda holidays, birders traveling with non-birders and wildlife enthusiasts

Day 1 – Entebbe/Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Meet your private Maseke Adventures driver-guide in Entebbe or Kampala.

Begin the journey west towards Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The landscapes change steadily as you travel towards western Uganda and the Albertine Rift.

Because this is a birding safari, appropriate stops can be incorporated where timing permits.

Continue towards Queen Elizabeth and check into your lodge.

If daylight allows, begin introductory birding around suitable lodge, savannah or park-edge habitat.

Watch the Rwenzori Mountains rise beyond the Rift Valley.

Tomorrow the birding begins early.

ASK ABOUT QUEEN ELIZABETH BIRDING LODGES

Day 2 – Kasenyi Birding, Wildlife & Kazinga Channel

Start early.

This morning, explore the Kasenyi plains and surrounding savannah habitats by private 4×4.

A conventional game drive may rush towards lions.

A birding drive behaves differently.

Stop for raptors.

Scan grasslands.

Check wet patches.

Study every interesting bird on a termite mound.

Potential sightings vary, but the open habitats can produce raptors, lapwings, larks, pipits, storks, egrets, weavers and numerous other savannah-associated birds.

And while you are birding, Queen Elizabeth’s wildlife keeps appearing.

Uganda kob. Buffaloes. Elephants. Warthogs. Lions, with luck.

And perhaps a leopard.

After lunch, the habitat changes completely.

Board a boat for the Kazinga Channel.

For birders, this can be one of the highlights of Queen Elizabeth.

Move slowly past shoreline habitats while scanning for water-associated birds.

Meanwhile hippos crowd the water, buffaloes rest along the banks and elephants may come down to drink.

Return to your lodge after the cruise.

PLAN MY KAZINGA CHANNEL BIRDING SAFARI

Day 3 – Morning Birding & Return to Entebbe/Kampala

Begin with another early birding session around suitable habitat.

After breakfast, start your private return journey towards Kampala or Entebbe.

If birding is your main reason for traveling, choose the 4- or 5-day version instead.

Queen Elizabeth has too many habitats to appreciate properly in a rushed visit.

4-Day Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari – From US$1,650 pp*

Savannah + Wetlands + Kazinga Channel + Ishasha

Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights

Starts: Entebbe / Kampala

Ends: Entebbe / Kampala

Main Areas: Kasenyi • Mweya • Kazinga Channel • Katwe/Crater Region • Ishasha

Tour Style: Private

Best For: Dedicated birders wanting multiple habitats without a long Uganda itinerary

Day 1 – Entebbe/Kampala to Queen Elizabeth

Meet your Maseke driver-guide and travel west.

Arrive in Queen Elizabeth National Park and begin introductory birding where time permits.

Overnight near the main park area.

Day 2 – Kasenyi & Kazinga Channel Birding

Begin before the heat builds.

Explore the Kasenyi plains and other suitable savannah habitats.

The emphasis is birds, but wildlife is everywhere.

Later, move towards the Kazinga Channel for a boat safari.

The boat gives birders a completely different perspective from the safari vehicle.

Rather than searching across distant grassland, many birds can be observed along the shoreline and water.

Keep binoculars ready.

Keep your camera ready.

And do not pack them away simply because an elephant appears.

ADD KAZINGA CHANNEL BIRDING

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari – Bird Watching Tours

Day 3 – Katwe/Crater Region Birding & Ishasha

Explore suitable habitats around the crater/Katwe side of the park according to current access, conditions and target species.

The landscape itself is spectacular.

Crater lakes, escarpments, open vegetation and wetlands create yet another change in birding environment.

Later continue south towards Ishasha.

Bird along the route and settle into your lodge.

If time permits, enjoy late-afternoon birding in the Ishasha area.

Day 4 – Ishasha Birding & Return

Start early for birding through Ishasha’s savannah, woodland and wetland habitats.

The southern sector adds another layer to Queen Elizabeth’s diversity.

And while your guide searches for birds, keep looking into the large fig trees.

The area’s famous tree-climbing lions may be resting above the ground.

After the morning experience, begin your onward journey.

Return towards Entebbe/Kampala or continue to Bwindi if Queen Elizabeth is part of a longer Uganda birding safari.

5-Day Queen Elizabeth & Ishasha Birding Safari – From US$2,150 pp

Our Recommended Queen Elizabeth Safari for Serious Birders

Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights

Starts: Entebbe / Kampala

Ends: Entebbe / Kampala or Bwindi

Main Experiences: Kasenyi • Kazinga Channel • Mweya • Katwe/Crater Region • Ishasha

Tour Style: Private Specialist Birding Safari

Day 1 – Entebbe/Kampala to Queen Elizabeth

Depart with your private Maseke driver-guide.

Travel west towards Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Use appropriate stops for birding where practical.

Arrive and settle into your lodge.

Enjoy introductory birding if time allows.

Day 2 – Full-Day Queen Elizabeth Savannah Birding

Begin early.

Today is designed around birds rather than trying to fit birding between ordinary wildlife sightings.

Explore suitable savannah, grassland, woodland and wetland habitats.

Your private vehicle allows you to stop when something interesting appears.

Scan for:

  • Raptors
  • Storks
  • Lapwings
  • Larks
  • Pipits
  • Weavers
  • Bee-eaters
  • Kingfishers
  • Herons
  • Egrets
  • Other open-country species

The mammals remain part of the experience.

You may find elephants while searching for birds.

A lion sighting may interrupt your checklist.

Uganda kob may fill the plains while raptors circle overhead.

That is exactly why Queen Elizabeth works so well for mixed-interest travelers.

Day 3 – Kazinga Channel & Wetland Birding

Today, concentrate more heavily on water-associated habitats.

Explore suitable areas around Mweya and the Kazinga Channel before taking a boat excursion.

The channel links Lake George and Lake Edward and supports exceptional concentrations of wildlife and water-associated birds.

Potential bird groups include:

  • Kingfishers
  • Herons
  • Egrets
  • Pelicans
  • Cormorants
  • Storks
  • African Fish Eagles
  • Waders
  • Gulls and terns
  • Other shoreline species

Species vary with season and conditions.

For photographers, the boat can offer excellent opportunities because you are viewing many subjects from water level rather than looking down from a safari vehicle.

Return to your lodge after the experience.

PLAN MY KAZINGA CHANNEL PHOTOGRAPHY SAFARI

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari – Bird Watching Tours

Day 4 – Crater Region to Ishasha Birding

Continue birding through another selection of Queen Elizabeth’s habitats.

Explore suitable crater, wetland and open-country environments before traveling towards the southern Ishasha sector.

Stop whenever the birding demands it.

This is why we prefer private travel for serious birders.

You are not racing another vehicle towards the lodge.

Arrive in Ishasha with time for afternoon birding where possible.

Day 5 – Ishasha Birding & Onward Journey

Start early.

Explore Ishasha’s savannah, woodland, riverine and wetland-associated habitats.

The area’s birdlife provides the final layer to an already diverse Queen Elizabeth itinerary.

Then there are the lions.

Ishasha is internationally known for its tree-climbing lions, and encountering them while on a birding safari gives the journey an experience few dedicated birding destinations can match.

After the morning birding, choose:

Return towards Entebbe or Continue to Bwindi for Albertine Rift birding and optional gorilla trekking.

PLAN MY 5-DAY QUEEN ELIZABETH BIRDING SAFARI

Why Queen Elizabeth Is One of Uganda’s Best Birding Destinations

Queen Elizabeth’s strength is not one celebrity bird.

It is extraordinary habitat diversity.

More than 600 bird species have been recorded in the park.

That exceptional list reflects habitats including: Savannah, Forest, Wetlands, Lakes, Channels, Woodland, Crater landscapes, Grassland

The park also sits in a fascinating ecological position where East African savannah and Congo-forest influences overlap.

For birders, that means variety.

For safari travelers, it means something equally important:

You do not have to choose between birds and wildlife.

Queen Elizabeth can give you both.

INCLUDE QUEEN ELIZABETH IN MY UGANDA BIRDING SAFARI

Kazinga Channel Birding Safari

If we had to select one Queen Elizabeth experience that works equally well for:

Serious birders

Casual birdwatchers

Photographers

Families

Non-birding safari travelers.

It would be the Kazinga Channel boat safari.

The channel links Lake George and Lake Edward.

Its shoreline attracts enormous numbers of animals and birds.

For birders, a slow boat creates opportunities to observe water-associated species from a completely different perspective.

For non-birders, there are: Hippos. Crocodiles. Elephants. Buffaloes.

And spectacular Rift Valley scenery.

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari – Bird Watching Tours

ADD KAZINGA CHANNEL TO MY BIRDING SAFARI

Kasenyi Birding Safari

Kasenyi is best known to conventional safari travelers for its open plains, Uganda kob and predators.

Birders see something else.

Open-country habitat.

Raptors.

Grassland birds.

Wet areas.

Scattered bushes.

Termite mounds.

The plains create opportunities for a very different group of species from those encountered around the Kazinga Channel.

And because lions also hunt around these plains, birding can suddenly turn into a big-cat safari.

PLAN MY KASENYI BIRDING DRIVE

Ishasha Birding Safari

Ishasha deserves more than being treated as a road transfer between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.

For birders, its combination of: Savannah, Woodland, Wetlands, Riverine habitat and Forest-edge influences makes it worth dedicated time.

Uganda Wildlife Authority documentation also identifies wetlands in the Ishasha sector as habitat where the elusive shoebill may potentially be sought.

But this should never be marketed as a guaranteed sighting.

Ishasha’s other famous residents require much less explanation.

Tree-climbing lions.

For birders traveling with non-birding companions, that combination can be particularly attractive.

ADD ISHASHA BIRDING TO MY SAFARI

Shoebill Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Can you see a shoebill in Queen Elizabeth?

Potentially. UWA identifies wetlands in the Ishasha sector as places where the species can occur.

But if the shoebill is your number-one target bird, we would not build your entire Uganda strategy around an Ishasha sighting.

Instead, consider combining Queen Elizabeth with a dedicated Mabamba excursion.

That gives you: Mabamba → Dedicated Shoebill Search plus

Queen Elizabeth → 600+ Species + Wildlife + Kazinga Channel

BUILD MY SHOEBILL & QUEEN ELIZABETH SAFARI

Queen Elizabeth Birding & Wildlife Safari

This is where Queen Elizabeth may outperform almost any other birding destination in Uganda for mixed-interest travelers.

A serious birder can spend the morning identifying raptors and grassland species.

Their partner can be watching lions.

Both can spend the afternoon on the Kazinga Channel.

One person is photographing kingfishers.

The other is photographing elephants.

Nobody feels that the safari has been designed entirely around somebody else’s interests.

This makes Queen Elizabeth especially strong for:

  • Couples
  • Families
  • First-time Uganda travelers
  • Wildlife photographers
  • Birder + non-birder combinations
  • Multi-generational trips

PLAN MY BIRDS & WILDLIFE SAFARI

Queen Elizabeth Bird Photography Safari

Queen Elizabeth can be excellent for bird photography because many of its habitats are more open than dense rainforest.

The Kazinga Channel can be particularly attractive.

A photography-focused itinerary can prioritize:

  • Private 4×4
  • Smaller group
  • Early morning light
  • Longer game drives
  • Slower birding pace
  • Kazinga Channel boat positioning
  • More time with individual birds
  • Extra Ishasha time
  • Equipment space
  • Fewer rushed transfers

Tell us whether your priority is: Maximum species or Better photographs.

They do not always require the same itinerary.

PLAN MY QUEEN ELIZABETH PHOTOGRAPHY SAFARI

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari from Entebbe

Most international travelers begin in Entebbe.

Maseke can collect you from:

  • Entebbe International Airport
  • Your Entebbe hotel
  • Another agreed location

Travel west towards Queen Elizabeth National Park.

For longer birding itineraries, we may recommend inserting Kibale before Queen Elizabeth rather than driving directly.

This produces a stronger route:

Entebbe → Kibale → Queen Elizabeth

 PLAN MY SAFARI FROM ENTEBBE

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari from Kampala

Already in Kampala?

Private pickup can be arranged from your hotel or another agreed location.

Starts: Kampala

Ends: Kampala, Entebbe, Bwindi or another agreed destination.

REQUEST KAMPALA PICKUP

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari from Fort Portal or Kibale

This is one of the most logical combinations.

Travel from Kibale towards Queen Elizabeth and watch the habitats change from forest to Rift Valley savannah.

A strong birding itinerary can become: Kibale Forest → Queen Elizabeth → Kazinga Channel → Ishasha

COMBINE KIBALE & QUEEN ELIZABETH

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari from Bwindi

Already trekking gorillas or birding in Bwindi?

Travel north through Ishasha. Instead of treating Ishasha as merely a transfer route, use it as the beginning of your Queen Elizabeth birding experience.

This creates excellent habitat progression:

Bwindi Montane Forest → Ishasha → Queen Elizabeth Savannah → Kazinga Channel

COMBINE BWINDI & QUEEN ELIZABETH

Fly-In Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari

Travelers with limited time can ask about domestic flight options serving the Queen Elizabeth region, subject to current schedules.

Fly-in arrangements work particularly well for:

  • Luxury travelers
  • Short holidays
  • Older travelers
  • Photographers carrying substantial equipment
  • Travelers adding Queen Elizabeth to another East African safari

Private Maseke ground arrangements can then begin from the relevant airstrip.

REQUEST A FLY-IN QUEEN ELIZABETH SAFARI

Combine Queen Elizabeth with Kibale Birding

This should be one of the most prominent combinations on the page.

The route is natural. And the habitat contrast is excellent.

Kibale: Tropical forest birding.

Queen Elizabeth: Savannah + Wetland + Kazinga Channel.

Add chimpanzee trekking and you have an even stronger safari.

PLAN KIBALE + QUEEN ELIZABETH

Combine Queen Elizabeth with Bwindi Birding

This is arguably the strongest continuation from Queen Elizabeth.

After birding the Kazinga Channel and savannahs, travel south through Ishasha towards Bwindi.

Now the habitat changes dramatically.

Queen Elizabeth: Savannah + Wetlands + Lakes.

Bwindi: Montane rainforest + Albertine Rift endemics.

And if desired:

Mountain gorillas.

PLAN QUEEN ELIZABETH + BWINDI

Combine Queen Elizabeth with Mabamba

Begin your Uganda journey with a dedicated shoebill search at Mabamba.

Then continue west towards Queen Elizabeth for a dramatically larger variety of habitats and species.

Mabamba: Shoebill + Papyrus Wetland.

Queen Elizabeth: Savannah + Kazinga Channel + Wetlands + Wildlife.

PLAN MABAMBA + QUEEN ELIZABETH

Queen Elizabeth as Part of a Complete Uganda Birding Safari

For serious international birders, Queen Elizabeth becomes even stronger when it sits between Uganda’s forest destinations.

A highly logical western route is:

Mabamba → Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi

Add Semuliki for specialist lowland forest birding.

Or add: Murchison Falls + Budongo for a longer country-wide journey.

DESIGN MY COMPLETE UGANDA BIRDING SAFARI

Private Queen Elizabeth Birding Safaris

Private travel matters for birders.

You decide when to stop.

You can spend twenty minutes with one raptor.

You can wait for better light.

You can tell your guide that the distant bird matters more than the nearby elephant.

You can leave early.

And you do not have to follow another traveler’s timetable.

A Maseke private Queen Elizabeth birding safari can include:

  • Private 4×4
  • Professional driver-guide
  • Birding-focused guide arrangements
  • Local specialist guides where appropriate
  • Private/custom boat arrangements where available
  • Early departures
  • Target-species planning
  • Photography considerations

Queen Elizabeth Birding Safari FAQs

Is Queen Elizabeth National Park good for birding?

Yes. Queen Elizabeth is one of Uganda’s most important birding destinations, with more than 600 recorded bird species across an unusually wide variety of habitats.

How many bird species are in Queen Elizabeth National Park?

More than 600 bird species have been recorded.

This exceptional diversity is linked to the park’s combination of savannah, forest, wetlands, lakes and other habitats.

What is the best place for birding in Queen Elizabeth?

There is no single best location because the park’s strength is habitat diversity.

Important areas include: Kasenyi, Kazinga Channel, Mweya, Crater/Katwe region and Ishasha.

Is Kazinga Channel good for bird watching?

Yes. The channel is particularly attractive for water-associated birds and also provides excellent wildlife viewing.

How long is the Kazinga Channel boat safari?

Boat experiences are commonly arranged as part of an afternoon or morning activity. The exact departure time and duration should be confirmed for your travel date.

Can I see a shoebill in Queen Elizabeth?

Shoebills can occur in suitable wetland habitat, and UWA documentation identifies the Ishasha wetlands as one area where they may be sought.

However, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

If shoebill is your priority, we recommend adding Mabamba.

What is Ishasha famous for?

Ishasha is internationally known for its tree-climbing lions, but birders should also value its savannah, woodland, wetland and riverine habitats.

How many days do I need for a Queen Elizabeth birding safari?

We recommend:

3 days for a short birding + wildlife introduction.

4 days for stronger habitat coverage.

5 days for a more complete Queen Elizabeth and Ishasha birding experience.

Can I combine Queen Elizabeth birding with wildlife?

Absolutely.

This is one of the park’s greatest advantages.

Birding and big-game viewing happen naturally within the same habitats.

Can I combine Queen Elizabeth and Kibale?

Yes. This is one of our most recommended combinations because Kibale adds tropical forest birding and optional chimpanzee trekking.

Can I combine Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi?

Yes. Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi form an excellent route, particularly via Ishasha.

Can I combine Queen Elizabeth birding with gorilla trekking?

Yes. Continue from Ishasha towards Bwindi and allocate separate time for Bwindi birding and gorilla trekking.

Can I combine Queen Elizabeth with Mabamba?

Yes. This is particularly useful when the shoebill is high on your target list.

Can I combine Queen Elizabeth and Murchison?

Yes. A longer Uganda birding itinerary can include both parks and then connect through western Uganda.

Can I start from Entebbe?

Yes. Most international Maseke travelers can begin from Entebbe.

Can I start from Kampala?

Yes. Private pickup can be arranged.

Can I start from Kibale?

Yes. Kibale to Queen Elizabeth is one of the most logical birding routes in western Uganda.

Can I start from Bwindi?

Yes. Travel north through Ishasha and make the transfer part of the birding experience.

Can I fly to Queen Elizabeth?

Domestic flights may be available subject to current schedules and the final itinerary.

Are luxury birding safaris available?

Yes. Maseke can combine private guiding, premium lodges and fly-in arrangements where appropriate.

Can solo birders book?

Yes. Solo private trips are possible, although per-person costs are usually higher because vehicle and guiding costs are not shared.

Can Maseke plan around my target bird list?

Yes. Serious birders should send us their target list before the itinerary is finalized.

Can non-birders join?

Absolutely. Queen Elizabeth may be one of our best recommendations for birder + non-birder couples because of its outstanding wildlife.

Is Queen Elizabeth good for bird photography?

Yes. The open habitats and Kazinga Channel can provide particularly useful photography opportunities.

What should I bring?

Consider:

  • Binoculars

  • Comfortable footwear
  • Light rain protection
  • Small daypack
