Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
For many travelers, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the centrepiece of a Uganda gorilla safari.
The experience begins early in the morning at your designated trekking sector. Following registration and a briefing, you enter the rainforest with professional guides and trackers.
There is no fixed walking distance. Mountain gorillas move freely through their habitat, so finding your allocated family may involve anything from a relatively manageable forest walk to several hours over steep, muddy and uneven terrain.
Then comes the moment you traveled for.Your guide slows down.Voices become quieter. And somewhere through the vegetation you see your first mountain gorilla.
You may watch a silverback resting beneath the canopy, juveniles playing through the vegetation or a mother quietly feeding with an infant nearby.
Standard gorilla trekking allows a regulated period with the habituated gorilla family once it has been located.
It is wild, unpredictable and impossible to reproduce from behind the window of a vehicle.

Which Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sector Should You Choose?
Bwindi is not one single trekking point.
There are four main gorilla trekking sectors, and choosing the correct one matters because your permit, lodge and road transfers should all work together.
Buhoma Sector – Northern Bwindi
Buhoma is one of Bwindi’s best-known trekking areas and has a well-developed selection of accommodation.
It can work particularly well when approaching Bwindi from the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park or when using Kihihi as the air access point.
Good for: Classic Bwindi itineraries, Queen Elizabeth combinations and a broad choice of accommodation.
Ruhija Sector – Eastern Bwindi
Ruhija offers a quieter highland setting on the eastern side of Bwindi and can work well within itineraries approaching through Kabale or continuing between different parts of western Uganda.
It is also of particular interest to travelers who want to combine gorilla trekking with Bwindi’s forest and birding experiences.

Rushaga Sector – Southern Bwindi

Uganda has two gorilla trekking national parks, and both can provide an extraordinary experience.

A valid gorilla trekking permit is required for every traveler participating in an official gorilla trek.
Permits are limited by trekking date and designated entry point, which makes availability one of the first things to consider when planning your safari.

What Does the Gorilla Permit Cover?
The permit gives you access to the regulated gorilla trekking experience on your confirmed date, including the official park trekking arrangements.

How Much Is a Uganda Gorilla Permit?
Uganda Wildlife Authority determines gorilla permit tariffs.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking is a genuine forest activity.
Uganda Wildlife Authority advises that treks require moderate fitness, and the total trekking experience can take several hours depending on the location of the gorillas.
Bwindi’s terrain can involve steep hills, vegetation, mud and uneven ground.
