Uganda Birding Safaris – Private Bird Watching Tours, Packages & Prices

From the prehistoric-looking shoebill to the forest birds of the Albertine Rift, Uganda rewards people who stop, listen and look.

A Uganda birding safari is not simply a normal wildlife safari where somebody occasionally points at a bird.

It can be an entire journey built around birds.

Begin quietly among the papyrus channels of Mabamba searching for the shoebill.

Follow the Nile through Murchison Falls looking for waterbirds, raptors and savannah species.

Walk beneath the forest canopy around Kibale.

Explore the Congo-influenced forests of Semuliki.

Watch the shores of the Kazinga Channel fill with waterbirds.

Then enter the ancient forests of Bwindi in search of Albertine Rift specialties.

At Maseke Adventures, we design private Uganda birding safaris for both serious birdwatchers and travelers who simply want birding to form an important part of a broader Uganda journey.

Uganda Birding Safaris – Private Bird Watching Tours

3-Day Uganda Shoebill & Birding Safari – From US$850 pp

A Short Uganda Birding Introduction

Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Starts: Entebbe
Ends: Entebbe
Style: Private
Accommodation: Mid-Range / Luxury
Main Target: Shoebill + Lake Victoria/wetland birds

Day 1 – Arrival in Entebbe & Local Birding

Meet your Maseke Adventures representative in Entebbe.

Depending on arrival time, begin with relaxed birding around suitable Entebbe and Lake Victoria habitats.

This first afternoon is deliberately gentle.

Rather than rushing across Uganda immediately after an international flight, settle in, adjust to the environment and begin building your Uganda bird list.

Overnight in Entebbe.

Day 2 – Mabamba Shoebill Birding

Start early for Mabamba.

Travel towards the wetland and transfer into the smaller boat/canoe used to explore its papyrus channels.

The headline target is unmistakable:

Shoebill.

But serious birders should resist the temptation to stop birding after finding it.

Spend time exploring the wider wetland for waterbirds, papyrus-associated species, kingfishers, herons and other birds according to conditions.

Return to Entebbe with further birding where time permits.

Day 3 – Entebbe Birding & Departure

Enjoy another morning around suitable local habitats depending on flight time.

Transfer to Entebbe International Airport.

REQUEST 3-DAY BIRDING SAFARI

5-Day Mabamba & Murchison Falls Birding Safari – From US$1,950 pp

Shoebill + Nile + Savannah Birding

Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights
Starts: Entebbe
Ends: Entebbe
Route: Entebbe → Mabamba → Murchison Falls → Entebbe

Day 1 – Entebbe Arrival & Local Birding

Day 2 – Mabamba Shoebill Tour

Explore Mabamba’s wetland channels searching for shoebill and other wetland birds.

Return for overnight around Entebbe.

Day 3 – Entebbe to Murchison Falls

Travel north.

Unlike a normal transfer day, a dedicated birding safari does not treat every roadside stop as wasted time.

Your guide can incorporate productive birding stops where appropriate while continuing towards Murchison Falls.

Day 4 – Murchison Falls Birding & Nile Boat Safari

Spend the morning birding through savannah and woodland habitats.

Later, explore the Nile by boat.

The river adds an entirely different layer of species while elephants, hippos and other wildlife keep non-birding companions engaged.

Day 5 – Murchison to Entebbe

Begin the return journey with birding opportunities along the route where time permits.

Day 1 – Arrival in Entebbe

Meet your Maseke guide and begin local birding if arrival time permits.

Day 2 – Mabamba Shoebill Birding

Day 3 – Entebbe to Kibale

Travel west towards Kibale with appropriate birding stops.

Settle into the forest region.

Day 4 – Kibale Forest Birding

Dedicate the morning to forest birding.

Depending on interests, the day can combine forest-edge habitats, wetlands and other suitable birding locations around the Kibale ecosystem.

Chimpanzee trekking can also be added.

Day 5 – Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Bird through changing habitats as forest gives way to Rift Valley landscapes and savannah.

Day 6 – Queen Elizabeth Birding & Kazinga Channel

Explore savannah and wetland habitats before taking a Kazinga Channel boat experience.

For birders, the boat is not merely a wildlife cruise.

It gives you access to concentrations of water-associated birds along the channel while mammals add another dimension.

Day 7 – Return to Entebbe

Bird along the return route where practical before reaching Entebbe.

Chimpanzee trekking can be incorporated if desired.

Day 6 – Queen Elizabeth Birding & Kazinga Channel

Explore savannah habitats before taking a boat excursion along the Kazinga Channel.

Birding becomes increasingly interesting as you approach the Albertine Rift forests.

Day 8 – Bwindi Birding / Gorilla Option & onward arrangements

For a pure birding safari, dedicate the day to forest birding.

For travelers wanting Uganda’s most famous primate encounter, the itinerary should be extended or adjusted to include gorilla trekking without sacrificing the strongest birding hours.

For Birders Who Want More Than the Classic Tourist Circuit

Duration: 10 Days / 9 Nights

Day 1 – Arrival in Entebbe

Meet your birding guide and settle into Uganda.

Day 2 – Mabamba Shoebill Birding

Search for shoebill and wetland species.

Day 3 – Entebbe to Fort Portal / Semuliki Region

Travel west with birding stops.

Day 4 – Semuliki National Park Birding

Enter one of Uganda’s most distinctive birding environments.

Semuliki’s lowland forest gives serious birders access to a bird community influenced strongly by the Guinea-Congo biome.

This is why Semuliki belongs in a serious Uganda birding itinerary rather than being treated as simply another forest.

Day 5 – Semuliki to Kibale

Continue towards Kibale with birding en route.

Day 6 – Kibale Birding

Explore forest and surrounding habitats.

Day 7 – Kibale to Queen Elizabeth

Travel south into the Rift Valley.

Day 8 – Queen Elizabeth & Kazinga Channel Birding

Dedicate the day to savannah, wetland and waterbird habitats.

Day 9 – Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi

Travel towards Bwindi, birding along the route.

Day 10 – Bwindi Birding / onward arrangements

Begin exploring Bwindi’s Albertine Rift birdlife.

For serious birders, we recommend extending this itinerary by at least one additional day rather than trying to rush Bwindi.

A Serious Uganda Birding Journey

Duration: 14 Days / 13 Nights
Style: Private Specialist Birding Safari

Day 1 – Arrival in Entebbe

Travel north with strategic birding stops.

Day 4 – Murchison Falls Savannah & Nile Birding

This habitat change is one of the great strengths of a longer Uganda birding safari.

Day 6 – Transfer towards Fort Portal

Continue southwest with birding stops where practical.

Day 7 – Semuliki National Park

Dedicate a full day to Semuliki’s Guinea-Congo-influenced forest species.

Day 8 – Kibale Region

Continue towards Kibale and bird the surrounding forest and wetland habitats.

Day 9 – Kibale Birding

Dedicate more time to forest targets rather than rushing onward.

Day 10 – Kibale to Queen Elizabeth

Travel into the Rift Valley and begin savannah birding.

Day 11 – Queen Elizabeth & Kazinga Channel

Explore multiple habitats and take the boat along the Kazinga Channel.

Day 12 – Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi

Travel towards Bwindi with birding stops en route.

Day 13 – Bwindi Birding

Dedicate the day to one of Uganda’s most important Albertine Rift birding landscapes.

For specialist birders, the exact sector and trails should be selected according to priority species, local conditions and guide advice.

Day 14 – Bwindi / Lake Mburo / Entebbe Arrangements

Complete the journey according to flight timing.

For serious international birders, we may recommend extending this itinerary beyond 14 days to avoid sacrificing productive birding time to the final road transfer.

DESIGN MY 14-DAY UGANDA BIRDING SAFARI

Uganda Birding Safaris – Private Bird Watching Tours

Why Uganda for a Birding Safari?

Uganda’s strength is not simply the length of its bird list.

It is the diversity of habitats that can be reached within one country.

On one journey you can move through:

Papyrus wetlands

Lake Victoria

Open savannah

The Nile

Lowland tropical forest

Montane forest

Albertine Rift highlands

Crater landscapes

Lakes and channels

Acacia woodland

That habitat diversity allows a birding safari to change dramatically every few days.

One morning you may be watching a shoebill in a papyrus wetland.

A few days later you may be looking for forest specialists under a closed canopy.

Then the journey climbs towards Bwindi and an entirely different suite of birds.

START PLANNING MY UGANDA BIRDING TOUR

Best Birding Destinations in Uganda

Mabamba Wetland – Best for the Shoebill

Mabamba is the logical first or final birding stop for many international visitors because of its proximity to Entebbe.

The headline target is the shoebill.

Explore the wetland by small boat with a local guide while also looking for other water- and papyrus-associated birds.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – Albertine Rift Birding

Bwindi should be a priority for serious birders.

Its forest and altitudinal range support an exceptional bird community, including numerous Albertine Rift endemics.

For birders, sectors such as Ruhija can be particularly important depending on target species and current conditions.

Bwindi also creates one of Africa’s unusual combinations:

Serious birding + mountain gorilla trekking.

Queen Elizabeth National Park – Birds + Wildlife

Queen Elizabeth is particularly valuable for mixed-interest travelers.

Its combination of savannah, wetlands, lakes, woodland and the Kazinga Channel means you can bird seriously while companions still enjoy elephants, buffaloes, hippos and other wildlife.

The Kazinga Channel boat experience can be particularly productive for water-associated birds.

Uganda Birding Safaris – Private Bird Watching Tours

Murchison Falls National Park – Nile & Savannah Birding

Murchison combines:

  • Savannah
  • Woodland
  • Riverine habitats
  • Nile birding
  • Waterbirds
  • Raptors
  • Classic African wildlife

It works particularly well for travelers wanting a birding safari that still feels like a traditional African wildlife journey.

Kibale – Forest Birding + Chimpanzees

Kibale allows you to combine forest birding with one of Uganda’s great primate experiences.

Spend dedicated time looking for forest species, then add chimpanzee trekking if desired.

Semuliki National Park – For Serious Birders

Semuliki adds something different.

Its lowland forest has strong Central African ecological influence, making it particularly important for birders looking for Guinea-Congo forest species.

This is not a destination we would add simply to make an itinerary longer.

It belongs in a birding itinerary because it gives you access to a bird community that differs markedly from Uganda’s montane forests and savannah parks.

Lake Mburo National Park – Acacia & Savannah Birding

Lake Mburo is particularly useful near the beginning or end of a southwestern Uganda circuit.

It adds acacia woodland, savannah and wetland birding without requiring the major northern detour needed for Murchison or Kidepo.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Montane Birding

For birders focused on Albertine Rift species, Mgahinga can add another high-altitude forest environment.

It can also be combined with golden monkey or gorilla experiences according to the final itinerary.

Uganda Birding Safari with Gorillas

You do not have to choose between birds and mountain gorillas.

In fact, Bwindi makes the combination unusually natural.

A well-designed itinerary can allocate one day to gorilla trekking and separate days to serious birding.

The mistake is trying to do both on the same day.

If birding matters, allow enough nights around Bwindi.

For example:

Day 1: Arrive Bwindi and introductory birding
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Day 3: Full-day birding
Day 4: Continue onward

That produces a far better experience than arriving late, trekking gorillas and leaving immediately.

PLAN MY BIRDING & GORILLA SAFARI

Uganda Birding Safaris – Private Bird Watching Tours

Uganda Birding Safari with Chimpanzees

Kibale makes the same combination possible with chimpanzees.

Rather than rushing through the region, stay long enough for:

Chimpanzee trekking

plus

Dedicated forest birding.

This works especially well in a longer:

Mabamba → Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi

route.

ADD CHIMPANZEES TO MY BIRDING SAFARI

Private Uganda Birding Safaris

For serious birders, private travel matters.

You may want to stop because you heard a call.

You may spend forty minutes trying to identify one difficult forest bird.

You may want to leave before breakfast.

You may want to stay at one site while a conventional safari group would already have moved on.

That is why our Uganda birding journeys can be arranged privately.

Your safari can include:

  • Private 4×4
  • Private driver-guide
  • Birding-focused guide arrangements
  • Flexible birding stops
  • Early departures
  • Target-species planning
  • Accommodation selected for location
  • Photography considerations
  • Optional gorillas/chimpanzees
  • Mid-range or luxury accommodation

The safari is built around your priorities rather than a fixed group timetable.

BUILD MY PRIVATE BIRDING SAFARI

Uganda Bird Photography Safaris

Bird photography and bird listing are not always the same trip.

A birder trying to maximize species may want to keep moving.

A photographer may happily spend an hour with one bird.

Tell us which matters more.

A bird photography itinerary can prioritize:

  • Private vehicle
  • Smaller party size
  • More time per location
  • Early morning light
  • Boat positioning where appropriate
  • Wetland photography
  • Forest-edge opportunities
  • Longer stays
  • Equipment space
  • Fewer rushed transfers

Mid-Range

Comfortable rooms, good meals and sensible proximity to birding areas.

Best for: Most private Uganda birding safaris.

Upper Mid-Range

Luxury

Premium lodges where the accommodation becomes part of the overall holiday.

Best for: Couples, photographers and birders who value both field time and comfort.

Mixed-Level Safari

Often the smartest choice.

Use a better lodge where the property genuinely improves the experience, and simpler accommodation where location matters more than luxury.

Where Can Your Uganda Birding Safari Start?

Entebbe

The best starting point for most international travelers and ideal for adding Mabamba immediately.

Kampala

Private pickup can be arranged before beginning your birding circuit.

Kigali

Some southwestern Uganda itineraries may potentially begin in Rwanda, subject to current border, visa and routing requirements.

Fort Portal

Useful for travelers already in western Uganda who want Kibale or Semuliki birding.

Bwindi / Kisoro

Birding can be added to an existing gorilla journey.

Murchison Falls

A northern Uganda wildlife itinerary can be converted into a more bird-focused journey.

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE STARTING

Best Time for Bird Watching in Uganda

Uganda offers birding throughout the year because much of the interest is in resident species.

However, weather and target species matter.

Drier conditions can make roads and forest trails easier.

Migration periods can add additional species.

Forest nesting and breeding activity can create different opportunities.

Instead of choosing your dates from a generic “best month” statement, tell us:

Your target species

Your preferred regions

Whether you want gorillas or chimpanzees

Your available travel dates

We can then design the itinerary around those priorities.

ASK ABOUT MY BIRDING DATES

How Much Does a Uganda Birding Safari Cost?

Our indicative mid-range planning prices begin around:

10 Days — From US$4,250 pp

12 Days — From US$5,350 pp

Uganda Birding Safari FAQs

Is Uganda good for bird watching?

Yes. Uganda combines exceptional habitat diversity with accessible wetland, savannah, forest and Albertine Rift birding.

What are the best birding destinations in Uganda?

For most international birders, we prioritize some combination of Mabamba, Murchison Falls/Budongo, Kibale, Semuliki, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Mgahinga and Lake Mburo depending on available time and target species.

Where can I see the shoebill in Uganda?

Mabamba is one of the best-known options and is particularly convenient from Entebbe. Shoebill opportunities can also exist in other suitable wetland habitats, including around the Murchison/Nile system.

How many days do I need for a Uganda birding safari?

Three days works for a short Mabamba/Entebbe experience.

Five to seven days allows multiple habitats.

Ten days produces a much stronger dedicated birding circuit.

Twelve to fourteen days is better for serious birders wanting a broader Uganda list.

Is 7 days enough for birding in Uganda?

Yes, if the itinerary is focused geographically.

Trying to include Murchison, Semuliki, Bwindi and every other major site in seven days would create too much driving.

A focused western circuit works better.

Is 14 days enough for serious birding?

Yes, for an excellent overview, although highly dedicated birders may benefit from an even longer itinerary if they have many target species.

Can I combine birding and gorilla trekking?

Yes. Bwindi is particularly suited to this combination.

Allow separate time for serious birding and gorilla trekking rather than trying to combine both activities into one day.

Can I combine birding and chimpanzee trekking?

Yes. Kibale is ideal for combining forest birding and chimpanzees.

Is Mabamba included in Uganda birding safaris?

We strongly recommend it for first-time birders interested in the shoebill, particularly because it integrates easily with Entebbe.

Do I need a specialist bird guide?

For casual birdwatchers, a knowledgeable safari guide may be sufficient.

For serious birders with target lists, we recommend arranging appropriately specialized birding guidance.

Can you design a safari around my target bird list?

Yes.

Send us your priority species when enquiring so that the route can be built around the relevant habitats and locations.

Can I send Maseke my eBird target list?

Yes. A target list is extremely useful for serious birding itinerary planning.

Are Uganda birding safaris private?

Maseke can arrange the road journey privately, giving you greater control over departure times, stops and pacing.

Are luxury birding safaris available?

Yes. We can combine serious birding with premium accommodation, private transfers and domestic flights where they improve the itinerary.

Is Uganda suitable for bird photography?

Yes. Tell us if photography is your main goal because photography itineraries should generally move more slowly than species-listing tours.

Can non-birders join a Uganda birding safari?

Absolutely. For mixed-interest couples or families, we recommend destinations such as Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale and Bwindi because they combine birding with wildlife, primates and scenery.

What should I bring?

For a dedicated birding safari consider:

  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Suitable telephoto lens
  • Field guide/app
  • Notebook or digital checklist
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Long trousers
  • Rain protection
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Small daypack
  • Waterproof equipment protection
  • Spare batteries
  • Memory cards
  • Your target species list

Can Maseke arrange a birding safari from Entebbe?

Yes. Entebbe is our recommended starting point for most international travelers and allows Mabamba to be incorporated easily.

Which Uganda Birding Safari Should You Choose?

Only have a few days and want the shoebill?

Choose the 3-Day Shoebill & Entebbe Birding Safari.

Want shoebill + classic African wildlife?
