Big Five Safari in Uganda: Rhino Tracking

Rhino Tracking Experience

It is advisable to schedule tracking during the cooler parts of the day, specifically between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, as well as between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, when the rhinos are most active.
Before the trek, participants receive a briefing on safety protocols. It is imperative to maintain a minimum distance of 6 to 7 meters from the rhinos, and the use of flash photography is prohibited to prevent startling the animals. While the terrain is predominantly flat, visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and varied vegetation.
Wildlife and Activities
In addition to rhino tracking, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to more than 40 species of mammals and reptiles, including antelopes, monkeys, hippopotamuses, and crocodiles. Ornithologists and bird enthusiasts may also explore the sanctuary’s rich avifauna, which comprises over 300 bird species, including notable species such as the shoebill stork and the grey-crowned crane. Other available activities encompass guided nature walks, nocturnal wildlife observation through night walks, and canoe excursions in the Lugogo wetland.

The cost of rhino tracking permits is set at $50 for foreign non-residents, $40 for foreign residents, and UGX 30,000 for citizens of East Africa. Children aged six years and older are permitted to participate in these activities. Visitors are advised to wear closed-toed footwear and long trousers and to carry insect repellent and sufficient water. The sanctuary features a variety of accommodation options, ranging from camping sites to lodges, thereby catering to diverse preferences and budgetary considerations.
