The tale of the African Big Five in Uganda
The African Big Five in Uganda refers to five of Africa’s most iconic and sought-after wildlife species: the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and Cape buffalo. Originally a hunting term for the most dangerous animals to hunt on foot, today these animals represent a must-see list for wildlife lovers and safari-goers. Uganda, known as the “Pearl of Africa,” is one of the few countries where you can see all members of the Big Five in their natural habitats.
Where in Uganda can I see the big five animals?
In Uganda, the most accessible and rewarding places to view the African Big Five in Ugandaare Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, and Kidepo Valley National Park. Each park offers a different landscape and animal viewing experience.
Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park, is home to the four of Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo. The park’s savannah, riverine forest, and proximity to the Nile create excellent conditions for wildlife viewing. Game drives and boat safaris offer high chances of spotting these animals.
Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in western Uganda, also houses four of the Big Five (excluding rhinos). The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, large herds of elephants and buffalo, and occasional leopards. It’s one of the country’s most visited parks and offers scenic beauty alongside wildlife diversity.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located about 170 kilometers north of Kampala, is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos. This sanctuary was established to reintroduce rhinos into the wild, as they were previously extinct in the country due to poaching. Visitors can track rhinos on foot with a ranger, offering a unique and intimate wildlife experience.
Kidepo Valley National Park, though remote, is perhaps Uganda’s wildest and most untouched safari destination. It hosts lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes and offers breathtaking views of the Karamoja plains.
Can you see all the Big Five in one day in Uganda?
Technically, it is very difficult due to logistics and travel distances between the necessary locations. The rhinos are found at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary apart from the zoo in Entebbe, while the other four are scattered in different national parks. A minimum of two to three days is recommended for a realistic chance to see all five. However, a well-planned tour combining Ziwa and Murchison Falls over a couple of days can offer a high chance of completing the list.
